On Friday, the Trust gifted four patu and taiaha to Te Aroha College, initially to be carried by the male and female house leaders during the school's house waiata and haka competition, but also as lasting taonga for each of the college's houses.

Ngāti Tumutumu Trust commissioned Ngāti Tumutumu carver, Michael Wickliffe, for this project. Each taonga was created to represent one of the college's four houses; Tainui, Aotea, Tokomaru and Te Arawa. Michael incorporated carving elements reflecting the distinctive styles of the rohe associated with each house, giving each taonga its own identity and meaning.

The gifting was an opportunity for the Trust to support the college and its rangatahi, adding something special to the house waiata and haka competition. The taonga will become part of the competition, carried by house leaders as they represent their respective houses.

Nei rā te mihi ki a Michael for the time, skill and mahi that went into creating these taonga. We look forward to seeing them carried with pride by the students of Te Aroha College.
